After the fuss of inserting a photo yesterday, I think I may be a bit better prepared today so this is attempt two! Yesterday’s effort looks a bit too big to me, although when I looked at it originally it did fit within the text. I don’t know how it looks to you.
Further to Val’s request for animal photos, I took this today of one of the youngest additions to the farm. He’s a red Hereford cross calf aged about three days and is naturally nosey, as are most calves. I fed him with the teat bucket to start with as his mother wanted nothing to do with him and kicked him away every time he tried to suck. We’ve now put him with another cow who calved the same day and she’s quite happy to feed both him and her own bull calf. His mother is young and had a very traumatic calving last time, which resulted in the death of her calf and a damaged back for her. Hopefully she’ll be more interested next time round. She’s back with the herd now and hasn’t looked or bawled for him at all, so really couldn’t be bothered.
What a beautiful picture! Does he have a name?
Sadly not (as yet). We usually call our calves after their mothers, but we know his mother as ‘whippet’ because she was built like one! If we can find her name in our records (G will know) and there’s a male version, he’ll probably be christened that! I just call him Little Red.
